Lisa Petrides is on the San Mateo Community College District Board of Trustees.  Their district includes Skyline College, College of San Mateo and Canada College, and they have recently opened the College of San Mateo Coastside facility in downtown Half Moon Bay.  In November of 2024 she was reelected to the Board.  The attached article provides details on her goals and positions.

Today we honor 14 organizations who were selected by the Rotary Gifts Committee as most deserving to receive a grant. Between our Foundation and our club, we awarded $41,000 in Community Gift Grants this year. Each group will give a brief talk about what they do in our community and how they plan to use their grant to further their mission.

In 1982, Judy Sleeth founded Art in Action to address the loss of arts education in California schools after Proposition 13. When her child’s kindergarten class lacked an art program, she began creating and teaching her own lessons. Her passion sparked a movement, and through word of mouth, Art in Action grew, bringing the joy of art to classrooms in need.

The mission of Art in Action is to provide an art curriculum that expands their knowledge in art techniques, cultural understanding, and core subject topics, along with providing art supplies and training for educators and volunteers to bring the curriculum to life!

Susan R Lin is the Head of Wine Expertise for online fine wine retailer Belmont Wine Exchange in the San Francisco Bay Area, serving customers worldwide. Susan has been named Master of Wine (MW) by the Institute of Masters of Wine. The Master of Wine credential is recognized globally for the highest standards of rigor in its holistic examination of all aspects of wine. Lin joins a prestigious group of 418 Masters of Wine around the world and is one of 56 Masters of Wine in the United States.

A lifelong devotee of music, Susan is a classical pianist and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Classical Piano Performance and Musicology. She has performed internationally as a Chinese classical and folk dancer. Susan also works with performing arts organizations to grow their audiences through innovative programming and events, integrating wine whenever possible. Her joy is to create memorable experiences through wine and the performing arts.

improving the housing and lives of people in our community.  HIP Housing enables people with special needs, either
from income or circumstance, to live independent, self-sufficient lives in decent, safe, low-cost
homes. To achieve our mission, we offer four programs. There are no fees associated
with enrolling in any of our programs.

Francesca is the lab manager for the Adrienne Correa Lab at UC Berkeley, where they study how simbiotic microorganisms influence their coral hosts, as well as ecosystem processes, under environmental stress. Her passion lies in learning about how we can transform genetics research into actionable solutions supporting conservation of critical marine ecosystems as our climate changes.

Mitone’s favorite projects include gardening for home-bound seniors and beach clean-ups. She has traveled to India for a Polio immunization campaign. She looks forward to joining other international projects specifically supporting women and children, micro-credit programs, and bringing clean water to communities.

Revolutionizing Aging: How Innovation and Emerging Technologies are Shaping the Future of Longevity and Healthcare. His presentation will explore the impact of emerging technology on aging and healthcare over the next 5, 10, and 20 years.

The House vs NCAA settlement authorizes schools to directly share a portion of their revenue directly with student-athletes.  The settlement caps these payments at roughly $20.5 million per shool in the first year.  This amount is expected to encompass all varsity sports.  How this money ends up being allocated will be one of the questions.   Roger Noll will be speaking about the impact of this decision on college sports.

Roger G. Noll is professor emeritus of economics at Stanford University.  Previously Noll was a Senior Economist at the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Institute Professor of Social Science at the California Institute of Technology.  Noll has published 17 books and over 400 articles and reviews on technology policy, antitrust, regulation, the political economy of public policy and public law, and the economics of sports and entertainment.  Among these are Government and the Sports Business, the first comprehensive analysis of professional team sports, and Sports, Jobs and Taxes, an analysis of the economic impact of a sports team on the local economy.  

These three students from the Service Learning Council at Menlo-Atherton gave this presentation to a national conference.
