Sixteen local students received more than $140,000 in scholarships from the Rotary Club of Menlo Park Monday, May 20, at a ceremony at the Menlo-Atherton Performing Arts Center, while more than 100 students received scholastic achievement awards.
Nearly 500 parents and students packed the arts center for the 39th annual event, which is the Rotary Club’s major project of the year that is funded in part by Tour de Menlo, the club’s annual bike ride.
Students from Menlo-Atherton, Sacred Heart Preparatory, Eastside College Preparatory and Menlo School received the scholastic awards, which were presented by the schools’ principals or their designees.

Students from Menlo-Atherton, Sacred Heart Preparatory, Eastside College Preparatory and Menlo School received the scholastic awards, which were presented by the schools’ principals or their designees.
The evening got underway with a rousing performance by the M-A Jazz Band and after a few words from club officials, and a speech titled “Bearers of Hope” by Pastor Hurman Hamilton of the New Beginnings Community Church of Menlo Park.
After the academic achievement presentation, the scholarships were presented by Maya Sewald, president of the Menlo Rotary Community Foundation and John Blake, chair of the club’s scholarship committee, which selected the winners.

*Orm and Doris Rector Scholarship, Citlali Rios Sanchez: U.C. San Diego.
*Tom and Barbara Borden Scholarship: Princess Palacios, San Francisco State University.
*Meta Scholarship: Nazario Cana Barrera, UCLA.
*Tarlton Foundation Scholarship: Marycruz Lopez Espinosa, Bryn Mawr.
