June was a dynamic month for the Rotary Club of Menlo Park, filled with service, learning, and celebration. From empowering over 300 first-generation college students at the College Success Collaborative to honoring Juneteenth with renewed commitments to equity, our club showed up with purpose. We explored global health, wine and music, and proudly joined thousands of Rotarians at the International Convention in Calgary. We closed the month with our annual Kick-In Kick-Out celebration—thanking outgoing President Bob and welcoming President Ali, who shared a bold vision for the year ahead.

We started the month by joining forces with fellow nonprofits for the 5th annual College Success Collaborative conference, where over 300 predominantly first-generation college students participated in workshops ranging from financial literacy to mental health. The energy was electric, and the growth of this event year after year is a testament to the commitment so many have to empowering future leaders.

Mid-month, we reflected on the meaning of Juneteenth—a day of remembrance, gratitude, and action. Many of us renewed our commitment to equity by supporting inspiring local organizations like Ambition Angels, who empower teens of color with training and mentorship.

Our June 11 meeting brought us back to global health, as Amy B. led an insightful session on infectious diseases—from Rotary’s decades-long fight to eradicate polio, to the dangers of antibiotic resistance, and the surprising comeback of measles. A hands-on demonstration showed just how quickly viruses can spread—and how much we all depend on vaccines and science to stay safe.

Later in the month, we welcomed Master of Wine Susan L., who took us on a journey through the sensory connection between music and taste. Her research showed that background music can transform how champagne is experienced—ranging from “romantic” to “rubbery,” depending on what’s playing. (Lesson learned: always pair your wine with a good playlist!)

Meanwhile, some of our members traveled to Calgary for the Rotary International Convention, joining over 15,000 Rotarians from 120+ countries. The event highlighted Rotary’s global reach, celebrated peace-building efforts, and featured speakers who reminded us of our shared mission. We were thrilled to see our very own Yuhui represent our club as a flag bearer in the opening ceremony!

Throughout the month, we also reflected on the work of our Menlo Rotary Community Foundation, which—with over $4 million in endowment—quietly fuels deep local impact. From $120,000 in annual scholarships to 1:1 mentorship, from community grants to the Belle Haven Community Garden, this behind-the-scenes effort continues to transform lives thanks to your generosity and service.

And then—after all that—we wrapped up the month in true Rotary style with our Kick-In Kick-Out (KIKO) celebration. Held at the beautiful Menlo College President’s home, we shared great food, local wine and beer, live music from Caleb, and lots of laughs. We celebrated outgoing President Bob with kind words, a few jokes (turns out he’s never sailed in the America’s Cup 😄), and sincere gratitude for his steady leadership. The gavel was then passed to our new President, Ali, who shared his exciting vision for the year ahead: deepen our service, grow inclusively, and amplify our presence.

If June was any indication, we’re off to a strong start. Here’s to another amazing year in Rotary! 💙🌍✨
