Thirteen high school students received $8,000 -$12,000 scholarships at the 41st annual Scholastic Achievement Awards ceremony May 11 at the Menlo-Atherton High School Performing Arts Center presented by the Menlo Park Rotary Club. In addition to four year awards, four Menlo Atherton seniors who have chosen to attend community college each received $1,000. The awards were presented by John Blake, president of the Menlo Rotary Community Foundation, and Lily Hurlimann, a director of the Foundation.
Funds for the scholarships were received from the annual club fund raiser, the Tour de Menlo bike ride, community donors, the Tsui/Tsiang family; the Rotary Club Foundation, the family of John D. Russell, the Crittenden family, Mary Ann Somerville, Wilcox and Sandra Patterson, Orm and Doris Rector and Meta. In addition, the Tarlton Family Foundation funded scholarships for three students who live in Belle Haven neighborhood. The total amount of scholarships awarded this year by the Rotary Club of Menlo Park totaled $164,000. The club also donated $51,000 to twenty three local community nonprofit groups.
Earlier in the evening, students from Menlo-Atherton, Eastside College Preparatory, Menlo School, Sacred Heart Prep and East Palo Alto Academy also received scholastic achievement awards. Scholastic achievement awards were presented to students by the principals or school director of Menlo-Atherton, Eastside Preparatory Academy, Sacred Heart Preparatory and Menlo School. The awards covered subjects ranging from science and Algebra to English as a second language.
